Most People Are Good

One line or verse or song can change everything in your life.  Don’t believe me, listen to these one-liners:

“I’m sorry, but we’ve chosen another candidate for the job.”

“No, you cannot use the car!”

“Oh, honey, we don’t have time for that.”

“I hate you, that’s why!”

“I’d choose you again, every time!!”

That last one I say to my husband all the time.  It never fails to make him feel better about us, about him, or about the world in general.  It tells him instantly that I appreciate him and I’m on his side–no small thing in this divisive world, I assure you.  I really would choose him again, too. He’s a great guy, and the perfect chill to my drama.

I started this post the way I did because this past weekend we watched fifteen minutes of the ACM awards.  Stay with me, I promise this will come together in the by and by.  Usually, we don’t watch award shows in our house.  Most of them are boring and when the presenters or winners go off on political tangents, certain individuals in our home take offense. I won’t name names, but I will say it’s not worth it!

luke

Anyway, one of the songs we heard during those few moments we tuned in to the show Sunday night was sung by Luke Bryan. You’ve probably heard it by now: Most People are Good.  Sweet song, and I’d love to share it with all my friends, highlighting it on my Instagram account…tagging it on Facebook, but I just can’t.

I’d like to promote this song and say I love it, but one line ruins my enthusiasm for doing that.

“I believe you love who you love, ain’t nothin’ you should ever be ashamed of…”

Oh, Luke, that sounds a little too open for me. I think you’re supporting alternative lifestyles with those lyrics, buddy, which makes me want to ask you a question or two.  Is this open acceptance of love really something you espouse in your own life?

For instance, do you really feel that…

If your buddy wanted to love on your wife, you’d be okay with that?
If your buddy wanted to love on your mom, would you be okay with that?
If your buddy wanted to love on your baby daughter…again, would you be okay with that?
And finally, if your buddy wanted to love on your grandma (cuz freaky-deakies need love too, right?), would you be okay with that, Luke?

Some folks will say I’m narrow minded, or silly, or hateful when they read this.  They’ll be tempted to think I don’t understand.  They’ll think I hate people who live alternate lifestyles.  They’ll call me bigot. In defense of myself, I will say none of that is true.

Others will say I’m making too big a thing out of fifteen lil’ words, but as I’ve already proven to you, I can punch you in the face and make you bloody in your soul using far fewer words than that.

Maybe it’s time I said that doing whatever you like is not okay with me!

I believe in absolute truth, and standards, and morals, and limits on your lovin’.

Here’s the thing: I don’t think Luke Bryan is a bad guy, and I don’t think his song is terrible or that singing it is going to ruin him for eternity, but I also don’t think he’s okay with anybody loving anybody in any way they want.

I’m not sure whether he sees the hypocrisy of this piece of his life, or whether his song has the potential to teach lies to the next generation?  I’ll let you decide that for yourself. What I will say is that I think Luke is probably pretty protective of his wife, his mom, his daughter, and his gramma.  I think he does have standards, but I think he thinks it’s no big deal, what this song has to say.  I disagree.  It is a big deal. People are listening to these lyrics again and again, and again…day in and day out.  They’re filling their souls with the message Luke is sending out over the airwaves.

Here’s my message…my truth:

Relativism is a joke and a lie.
Everything is not permissible!
Everything is not beneficial.

For me, that one line in Luke’s song says it’s okay to defy God.  It’s not okay with me!

“…if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 NIV

Do you like award shows?  When have you stood up to say “That’s not okay with me.”

 romans-6_14

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. Romans 6:12-13

…sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. Romans 6:14

Would you read the verses above one more time before continuing on with this blog post?

Thanks!

Did you notice when you reread the verse the number of action words that are in it?
Don’t let sin reign…
Don’t offer yourself to evil…

But rather…
Offer yourselves to God.
Offer every part of yourself to him!

Amazing how active this command becomes when you really look at what it’s saying, right? And the promise and hope it provides—amazing!

Sin shall no longer be your master!

No longer!

Never again!

Sin will not have that power over you!

Maybe, like me, you can remember those days when sin had mastery over you. Those days were filled with unruly attitudes and unbridled behaviors.

Lies were told.

Promises broken.

Gossip flew out of unholy lips, and money, well, money was king.
Me and hubs, we scrounged to get it, became greedy in order to keep it, and squandered it on ourselves, never thinking of others.

That was before Love broke through!

Once our hearts were broken; once the Son came up over our horizon; once the price of redemption was paid, everything changed for my husband and me. Sin was no longer our master. Now, we could choose.

Now, we could see what had previously been hidden.

Now, we knew our mission…to tell everyone about our wonderful Jesus and what he’d done for us.

Light.

Hope.

Possibility…

…and sometimes challenges, I won’t lie.

But these were all ours, these blessings and growing pains, and now life got really exciting, really fast.

I guess what I’m saying in all this is that there is a new year coming, and I want to see as many friends and family (and even strangers), as possible come to the knowledge of another way of living. A way that is the Way.

Sin doesn’t have to rule your life. Not anymore. There is a new path available to you, a new way to walk in this world. A new and exciting life of integrity rests just beyond your choice. Will you walk in that new way in 2018? If you do, I promise you’ll never want to go back!

Back to what? Greed. Disappointment. Guilt that you just can’t shake off, because you know deep inside that you’re not living right, not making the best decisions, not being generous, not forgiving anyone, let alone yourself.

Sin creates bondage, whether we realize it or not.

Turn the tables on sin this year. Let it be THE year of renewal, rebirth, redemption and do-overs. Jesus is waiting to help you get started. Contact me if you need to know how. I’ve seen the forest and I’ve seen the trees, but the mountain top—Oh yeah, the view from up there is magnificent!!! Find out for yourself. Reach out to me in the comments section below, leaving an email where I can contact you, and I will.

Know, there is a better way. Find it, now!

Did you once live with sin as your master? What changed for you, and how do you live life now?
